When researching birth records in the state of Alabama, there are a few rules regarding public records that are important to know. Most of these points are fairly simple, but anyone interested in researching or accessing vital records, more commonly known as public records, can and should read more about Alabama's laws as detailed in Code 22-9A-21[1975].
Birth certificates are usually not immediately counted as public records, and in Alabama this information becomes available 125 years after the date of birth. During this time, access to the certificate is granted only to the person, as well as certain members of his or her immediate family.
Though the state of Alabama only started keeping a record of births in 1908, it is often possible to find information about persons born before this date directly through the county board.
