Vermont is one of the more interesting states in which to search for birth records and other vital statistics. In Vermont, as in other states, birth records are under the control of a state agency, in this case known as the Vital Records Section of the Vermont Department of Health. As with other states, records are transferred from the Vital Records Section to a separate institution after a specified amount of time in Vermont, this institution is called the State Archives and Records Administration.

What makes Vermont so unique is that it chooses to transfer birth records from the Vital Records Section to the State Archives after a period of only five years. This means that it can often be difficult to remember which state entity holds the record you're trying to receive.

Many researchers get around this problem by attempting to order Vermont birth records over the internet through public records searches. This way, they may be able to find what they need more easily and may also stand a good chance of getting their records sooner.

Birth records in Vermont are kept at the state office for the first five years after birth. You may order Vermont birth certificates from last five years from the state office. If you need an older record, you will have to contact the Vermont State Archives. The fee is $10.00, and you may need to show proof of eligibility to receive the information you ask for.
