Founded originally as Baker County in 1868, the region was renamed Chilton County in 1874.
Acquiring certified copies of Chilton County public records is not difficult providing you meet the eligibility requirements (which vary from document to document). If you are allowed to have the record, then you just need to visit the health department office in Clanton. They have counter service during regular business hours and you can just stop in to place your request. With a completed form and correct fee, you can have your Chilton County public records in about half an hour.
For those not in the Clanton area, you can just send in your applications through the mail directly to the main state Vital Records office. They process the requests the same way. You should get a response back in less than 2 weeks.
Chilton County Birth Records
Most Chilton County birth records will date to at least 1908 but there may be many that are older. Unfortunately, the time restriction on accessing birth records is 125 years so you will only be able to request these older records for pre-1886 births. For more modern Chilton County birth records, you will have to be an immediate family member in order to be allowed to make a records request. You can also apply to get a copy of your own birth certificate as well. The fees to order a birth certificate copy is currently $15 USD, whether they find the document or not.
Chilton County Death Records
You can request Chilton County death records for anyone once 25 years have passed since the date of death. Until then, you can only make a request if you are looking for the record for your own parents, children, spouse or sibling. ID will be required to prove your relationship, and the search fee is also $15 USD. Since all Chilton County death records older than 25 years are public domain, you can also find a lot of indexes and images of records through online genealogy searches. Of course, those are purely informational and not an official certified copy.
Chilton County Marriage Records
Both marriage records and divorce records are available to the public without any restriction, and can be ordered from the health department or state Vital Records office. Chilton County marriage records cost $15 USD and were collected by the state starting in 1936. There may be older records going farther back though, depending on the area. Check the State Archives and probate courts for more on pre-1936 material. Divorce records from 1950 are also part of the public domain.
Chilton County Criminal Records
The only Chilton County criminal records you are going to be able to acquire are your own, unless you are an eligible employer who needs these documents for a background check. Copies of these records are $25 USD apiece, and can only be requested through the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center in Montgomery. You can send an application by mail, and the proper forms can be downloaded from the ACJIC website.
