Initially formed in 1864, Pima County, Arizona, was initially one of the four largest counties in the state. Native Americans have inhabited the county for centuries, and Spaniards initially saw the area in the 1690s. The population increased substantially in the late eighteenth century after both silver and gold were discovered in the area. The county itself is just over 9,000 square miles in size and encompasses Arizona’s second largest city – Tucson.
Finding Pima County public records in person is a fairly difficult process. The first step is to discern which county office you need to speak with. The Superior Court Clerk for the county offers access to all civil records including marriage certificates and death records. The Vital Records office houses the birth and death records for those occurrences after 1950. Those births and deaths that happened prior to 1950 are on file with the state Vital Records office. Both the Vital Records office and the Superior Court clerk’s office have online interfaces, but it’s essential to remember that pulling up any type of record from any of these offices often comes with fees. Both the online interfaces and the offices themselves, however, accept credit cards, and should you visit either of the brick and mortar locations, you can pay for copies of the records in cash.
