The area of Contra Costa County in California was once what is thought to be a grassy savanna, with many mammals that have left behind some fossils to help us learn about them and what they were like. It is also one of the areas where there was a vast amount of Native American population. They are thought to have been hunters and gatherers who traded and were nomads. In the 1700's there were Spanish missions set up in the area, bringing the influence of Spain to a greater point in North America. In the years 1846-1848, US settlers organized and began to gain control of the area. Contra Costa County was established in 1850, the same year that California became a state. The name itself means 'opposite coast', referring to being opposite from San Francisco to the east.
