The area that became known as Fresno County was first documented by the Spaniards. They were searching California at the time, looking for a place to put missions when they stumbled across the area. The name of the area comes from the Spanish word Fresno, which stands for ash tree. The area had a number of ash trees there which is why the Spanish explorers decided to use the word in order to name the area.
The area, however, has had a number of historical problems that have gone along with it. Many times there have been natural disasters that have destroyed the area so much that the county seat actually got moved. There have been fires and even land disputes about the area, making it one that definitely has a great deal of historical interest for those who are looking for the history of Fresno County. Those who are looking for information about their family members, or their friends, can find all of this information in the public records. In this county, the Fresno County public records can be found at the Fresno County Recorder Hall of Records, room 302, 2281 Tulare St., in the main city of Fresno.
