The area of Kern County was claimed by the Spanish in 1769. It was a few years later, however, when the Europeans began to live in the area thanks to Walker Pass, which is a pass that helped people to get into the area through the Sierra Nevada. That area is, now, a landmark that thousands of visitors come to see every year. The county, however, was created in 1866 and the center of the county was located in Havilah, which, at the time, was a huge city but is now an abandoned mining area.
The area, however, was already settled by some Native Americans and they did not like the fact that people were mining their area, and a mini-war began between the whites and the Native Americans. This led to a variety of things happening in Kern County, including the Battle of San Emigdio. There is a rich history in this area, and those who are looking for Kern County public records need now to head not to Havilah, which is, as stated before, abandoned, but to the Kern County Assessor/Recorder 1115 Truxtun Ave., which is in Bakersfield, CA.
