The area of California has a very long and varied history, mainly due to the fact that it has been lived in by a variety of different cultures, including Native Americans, the Spanish, and Europeans. In the case of Ventura County, this area was first recorded to be colonized by the Spanish, in 1542, thanks to an exploration by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. It was not, however, until over two hundred years later when the area was occupied by the Spanish, thanks to a military expedition led by Gaspar de Portala, who happened to be heading to Monterey from San Diego and who went through Ventura County. There was a priest who went with the expedition and who said that the area was a beautiful area, which is why a mission was settled there as well.
