Hillsborough County, Florida was actually considered a county before Florida was considered one of the states in the country. In January of 1834, it was properly incorporated. In 1845 the state was bought by the United States from the country of Spain. It was the state’s 19th county, and it was named after Lord Hillsborough of Great Britain. He was the Colonial British Secretary, and the people of the area thought very highly of him. The school district for this area is the eighth largest in the country, and has appeared on America's Best High Schools list. Once made up of two other counties, Alachua and Monroe, the original boundaries of Hillsborough now include the counties of Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee, Manatee, Pasco, Polk, and Sarasota.
