Many times there is no interesting story behind a county or a city and why it is named what it was named. Often it’s because the area reminded someone of a specific word in another language, ect. Sometimes, however, the area is named for a very specific reason, as is the case for Will County. This county was named after a man who was named Dr. Conrad Will. Now Dr. Conrad Will was not a physician, but a politician and businessman. This man actually was involved in a great deal of different types of salt production that went on in the south of Illinois, and who actually was a part of allowing slaves to be leased from other states so that they could be used in Illinois, which was a free state.
He went on to become a member of the Constitutional Convention and the Legislature, and was instantly remembered fondly by those who knew him.
