In 1706, the group of people known as the General Assembly of Maryland decided to create what became known as the Port of Baltimore for the tobacco trade. It was over twenty years later, however, before Baltimore City was founded. The city was named after Lord Baltimore, known by name as Cecilius Calvert, who was the first governor of Maryland. What became interesting is that this little port, which was designed to help with the tobacco trade, became an extremely important port when the American Revolution began, as it was a strategic place to be if you were looking to fight the enemy.
The Battle of Baltimore is where everything seemed to come to a head, and after that the area became extremely popular and grew rapidly. Now Baltimore is one of the major shipping and manufacturing cities in the world and is looked to by many as one of the nicest cities to live in.
