St Louis County, Missouri, was created in 1812. First it was a French Colonial District called French Louisiana. St Louis County did not include the city of St Louis as of 1876 when the city moved apart from the county. There are a couple of protected areas within its boundaries: The Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge and Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site. One thing that stands out about this area is that about 173 square miles of it is unincorporated, making it a local area to be supported by local services for trash collection, municipal services, and other things that a incorporated county would usually take care of. All together there are 91 municipalities and 9 unincorporated areas that have to take care of their own local areas. The weather in the area is historically rainy and offers more thunderstorms than most other areas do. As a matter of fact, there are thunderstorms for approximately 40 out of every 50 days.
