The area that is now known as Bernalillo County was not always so. Before 1852 it was just another piece of land located in New Mexico. In January of that year, however, the county was established but it was not the United States that owned it, but Mexico. It is believed that the area was named after the Gonzales-Bernal family which was known to have lived in the area before the 1700’s, but because it was Spanish rule at the time, no one is really quite sure of exactly how the area was named.
The main seat in Bernalillo County is Albuquerque, which is known now for being a place for big business and for city life. Those who want to live outside of the city can easily commute in for their work and can enjoy a more suburban life, while those who like the busy feeling of a large city can enjoy feeling that right in the main city of Albuquerque. Those who want to find Bernalillo County public records, however, may want to head into Albuquerque, as the records they’re looking for are likely there, located at the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office at One Civic Plaza NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
