Some areas of New York have a little bit of history, others have a great deal. In the case of Monroe County, there is tons of history that goes along with it. This area was established in 1683, until that time it was part of the well-known Albany County. Because it was so large, and because it went through parts of northern New York as well as parts of Vermont, it was decided that the area would be broken up. Monroe County was part of this breaking up. The area, however, has even more of a history to it.

Those who live in the area have heard about how, in 1776, many of the Loyalists who lived in Tyrone County decided to move to Canada when the American Revolutionary War was ended. This Tyrone County is actually Monroe County, and it was named so in order to honor General Richard Montgomery, who died while he was trying to capture Quebec city.
