Back long before it was settled, the area of Hamilton County was surveyed by a man known as John Cleves Symmes. This man had a very interesting family life and history. He began his career as a delegate to the Continental Congress and then decided to become a pioneer and to explore the Northwest Territory, of which Ohio was definitely a part of. In his travels he decided to ask the government to purchase this area and it became part of the Symmes Purchase. In 1788 the first settlers actually came down the Ohio river and settled the area, settling Cincinnati first, although, at the time, the area was known as Losantiville.
It was organized quickly, however, and Hamilton County became known as the second county in the entire Northwest Territory, which was, at the time, quite a feat. There were over 2,000 people living there and it, to this day, remains one of the larger counties in Ohio. Those who are looking for Hamilton County public records would do well to first look to the Hamilton County Recorder 138 East Court St., Suite 209, in Cincinnati.
