There are many times when a state, or a county in that state, can go ignored by a country. Then something happens and suddenly everyone knows exactly where you’re talking about when you say that name of that state or county. This is something that happened in the case of Multnomah County. This county has been around since 1854, and was formed due to a petition of businessmen who were in Portland who said how inconvenient it was to have to travel all the way to Hillsboro to bring their taxes in. In response to this the government made a new county and now the businessmen were able to go to Portland in order to bring their revenues and taxes.
But people do not know the name Multnomah County from this history – they know it because of the 2000 presidential election, when the area almost cost George W. Bush the win. Al Gore, at the time, held the county by over 104,000 votes, which helped to offset the advantage that Bush had received from winning every other Oregon county.
