The largest in the state of Tennessee, Shelby County is a fairly common destination for those seeking public records. While the most commonly sought-after records are those for births, deaths, marriages, and divorces, many other kinds of records are available. Most Shelby County public records can be found online or at the office of vital records. Some, though, can be found with the help of the court clerk.
The Shelby County courthouse, which plays host to the clerk, is an interesting structure in and of itself. Located in the city of Memmphis, you’ll find it on Adams Avenue between second and third street. It was initially created by James Gamble Rogers in 1909. Considered to be Neo-classical in design, the front of the building features an extensive portico with a cornice. The whole face is supported by Ionic columns. You’ll likely notice a number of beautiful sculptures in front of the courthouse thanks to a program that was pushed by J. Massey Rhind in the early nineteen hundreds. The main entrances are surrounded by huge figures that represent a number of virtues including liberty, peach, and prosperity. Upon first glance, however, this courthouse is best known as the place where Dr. Hannibal Lecter escapes from custody in the film Silence of the Lambs.
