The county was started in 1836 and was originally named Harrisburg County, after John Richardson Harris, who was one of the first settlers in that area of Texas. The name of the county was changed in December of 1839 to Harris County. The county has become famous for a number of things, including a few negative ones, such as being the county to receive the most tornado warnings in the United States, as well as being the county that has sent the most people to the death chamber.
