Salt Lake County, Utah, is named for the great Salt Lake, which helped to power mills and other agricultural needs during the pioneering days. Known to be the home of some of the Native Americans over the centuries before being settled, William H. Ashley was the first white man to lead trappers to the area in 1825. In 1847, the first settlers arrived. They were Mormon and were directed by Brigham Young. The first school opened in 1847 in a tent. Though the first settlers were Mormon, there are people from many religious backgrounds, and many countries who came to settle in this new county, which was to become home to many, and a supply point to more. It has become the home of the Latter Day Saints Church, as well as the home of the state capitol. Now, it is known for its salt mining and the Stock Exchange. Other major industries are transportation, insurance, finance, medical, and education.
