Accessing Nevada Court Records

The US state of Nevada has an extensive legal system with courts at various levels. But no matter what the court level, each court in the state is responsible for maintaining detailed court records. The courts are legally bound to do this, and they are also obliged to share the information contained within the records with anyone who is eligible to receive it, and makes an application to the correct authority in the right format. But it is good to know that not all information will be shared; some information is kept confidential and is never given out.

General Information on Nevada Court Records

Usually in Nevada, Clark County generates and maintains a vast collection of court records in different forms. If you wish to access, review or obtain them, you may do so by contacting the office or department that is responsible for maintaining those records. In some cases, there might be fees to obtain the records, which is nonrefundable even if the record cannot be found for whatever reason.

The Nevada Administration Office of the courts is the administrative arm of the Nevada Judicial Branch. Thereby, access to the records from the courts of Nevada is possible by approaching the Clerk’s office at the county that heard the case. The county websites offer easy-to-use search features to help you search for the record.

You must access all court records locally. There is no unified court system database. However, you can make inquiries online.

Who Maintains the Nevada Court Record Information?

Nevada Court records from September 1909 until currently are maintained by the Clerk of the Court. The Clerk of the court allows people to see this information. The legal community, as well as the court agencies, can access it too. You can obtain information in person at the records counter. You can do so by mail or you can call up. You need to search and copy requests for records from 1909 to 1990 and submit in person or through the mail.

Records Viewing and Reproduction of Documents

There are certain cases you might need to view on film like older records that are maintained on microfilm.

Only attorneys of record and litigants may view the contents of sealed domestic records. To obtain information on an adoption or sealed civil and criminal case, you will require a court order. It is also illegal to move any documents, exhibits or files from the office of the Clerk that was meant for viewing.

To access court records, a case number is required. If you don't have the number of the case, you must furnish the names in detail, and the year when the litigation was filed. In case the issue is untraceable, then you might have to put down a search request with the Records Division. The cost for a search prior to 1990 is nominal per year. The cost for photocopies is also less. You need to clear all fees before placing your request.

It is possible to certify the photocopied document, but there is a charge for each document. It can also be exemplified for an additional fee per document. The Clerk will not be able to exemplify or certify, in case the original is not there on file. Your request may take up to 2 weeks to complete.
