Custodial clerks of the North Carolina court records strongly encourage that any requests for case files or other documents be formally presented in writing. The court records of North Carolina are official documents which have been entrusted to the clerks of the state.
It is at the discretion of the clerks of the individual and specific governing bodies of any North Carolina court records whether or not to allow or deny access to case files. Requests which have been denied will be accompanied with a written notice of denied access. Written confirmation of denial may also be provided in the event that an oral request for records is denied.
The court records of North Carolina are openly available for viewing by all residents for general purposes. Case files will be made available to the public unless otherwise exempt due to state statute or other restrictions such as judicial court orders.
