Wyoming court records
Accessing Wyoming Court Records
According to the current laws in the US, it is the court's responsibility not just to listen to cases and pass judgments, but also to maintain detailed records. This is why the courts in all states, in the country, maintain the records diligently. Wyoming is of course, not an exception in this.
The Right to Information guarantees your right as a citizen to access these records, and each state in the country must follow this. However, having said that, it also must be mentioned here that, each state can enact their own laws about how the records are to be accessed. According to the current laws in Wyoming, court records from the State and the Country courts are treated as public records. This means that, you can access them all, unless of course a particular record has been kept private or there is a specific court order that seals a particular record.
There are different courts in the legal hierarchy of the state. Each of the 23 counties in the state has District courts. These are the Trial courts that enjoy general jurisdiction. Each county also has a Circuit court. However, these courts have limited jurisdiction and can hear only criminal misdemeanor and small civil lawsuits. Cases move up from these District or Circuit courts to the state Supreme Court for appeals.
It is important to understand the legal system of the state because to get the record you want you have to approach the right court. Though you have the legal right to receive the court record, you must still approach the right Clerk's office. If you don't you cannot get the record; your appeal will be turned down.
Accessing the Court Records in Wyoming
It has been decided by law that the records should be made accessible by anyone who is eligible to get it. There are just three requirements. You must prove that you are eligible by telling the court why you want the record and proving your relationship with the people in the record, you should pay the fee for the search and the certified copy of the record, and you should make the application in the correct format and send it to the correct office. If you meet all these three issues, then there is no reason why you will be denied.
Exceptions
There are some exceptions to this. In other words, you will not get the record in some cases, and these are:
- If the record has been deemed private because the state believes that it contains confidential or personal information that is best kept a secret.
- If any of the two parties has specifically asked the judge to keep the contents of the lawsuit private and not sharable.
- If you haven’t applied to the right office and if the office does not have the record.
- If the reason, for accessing the record is unacceptable.
- If your application is vague and cannot be understood.
- If you have provided incorrect information while applying for the record.

Wyoming Court Records: Laws on Accessibility
In general, court records are considered to be public information in the U.S. However, this is a general rule, and each state has the authority to enact its own laws regarding the public accessibility of state court records. Wyoming has provided that court records from the county to the state level are public records, except for those either sealed by court order, or otherwise deemed private by state law.
The Wyoming Court System
The Wyoming court system consists of District Courts, which exist in all 23 counties and are divided into nine judicial districts. District courts are the trial courts of general jurisdiction in Wyoming. Circuit Courts are limited jurisdiction courts hearing only misdemeanor criminal and smaller civil cases. Circuit courts also are in all 23 counties. Any appeals of District or Circuit Court cases are directed to the state Supreme Court appellate system.
Public Court Records in Wyoming
Wisconsin, like most other states in the U.S., has determined by state law that Wisconsin court records should be made available to the general public. That does not mean, however, that all court records are available for general viewing. Any court record or document that is considered private due to state law or sealed by court order is not available to the general public.
