In the State of Colorado, criminal records are maintained in a central depository in the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Record Check, a division of the Colorado Department of Public Safety. The criminal history records are computerized and you need to create an account from the website to be able to perform background checks. The records contain detailed information about the arrest records of individuals based on fingerprints provided by the different Colorado law enforcement agencies. It should be noted that arrests that do not have fingerprints are not available from this central database. The public cannot gain access to juvenile records, sealed records and warrant information. The list of registered sex offenders is available from local law enforcement agencies.
A background check using the CBI records requires that the searcher should agree to the terms of the Bureau, which states that the searcher is testifying that the results of the criminal record search will not be used for any financial gain. There are accounts created in the CBI that are issued a special unique report number. If a searcher has been issued one, the number should be entered after the searcher has already logged in to the system. Although a searcher will not be charged, they will also be required to provide the last four digits of their credit card.
Searches for criminal records can be done by creating an account with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Record Check. A fee of $6.85 will be charged for each name that you search. For individual searches without creating an account, the Bureau site only accepts Visa or Mastercard credit cards. The criminal record search is not limited to your own personal criminal record. You can search for the record of any individual in Colorado, provided you meet the guidelines and are paying the non-refundable fee for each name that you search, regardless of the result. Criminal history record can be searched by providing the exact name without any suffixes like Jr, II, III. Sr or Esq, and the exact date of birth.
If you need to search for court cases, the place to go is CoCourts.com with court records for the different counties of Colorado. It requires the creation of an account. The fee is $6 for each unique search and search results can be reviewed for 24 hours. After the maximum number of hours for review is reached you will be required to pay another fee. Initial searches can be done by providing up to four names separated by commas for the same last name, if you do not know the exact first name. This can reduce your fees since individual searches for each name combination will each be charged at $6.
The State of Colorado Courts have also partnered with Background Information Service (BIS) for court records and pre-employment criminal record searches. It also requires the creation of an account on the BIS website. Each background search carries a charge of $2.

Step 1.
If requesting a manual search, download the Colorado Background Check Request Form.
Step 2.
Fill out the form and mail the completed form with a $13 fee to CBI.

If performing an internet-based search, visit the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and click on "Individual" to begin a search without an account.
