Obtaining Mississippi Criminal Records
In Mississippi, the Criminal Information Center (CIC) maintains a database of the criminal records for the state’s law enforcement agencies, but the Mississippi Department of Health provides criminal records for the public. Fingerprints must be taken and submitted online through the Fingerprint Transmission System.
Who is Allowed to Retrieve Mississippi Criminal Records?
Only law enforcement agencies and authorized employers are allowed access to Mississippi criminal records. Once a criminal record search is performed, an authorized letter will be mailed to the person of interest detailing whether they passed the Mississippi background check, and this letter can be used to gain employment for two years.
Using the Online System
An authorized employer or agency must install the MSDH Certificate Authority and Security Certificate on the computer that will transmit fingerprints for the criminal record request. Installation only takes a few minutes. Once the FTS (Fingerprint Transmission Service) is installed, employers can transmit fingerprints for Mississippi background checks online.
