In the New York State Unified Court System or NYS UCS, a state-wide criminal history record search (CHRS) can be accessed by the general public for a charge of $65 per record. The fee for the search is paid in the form of a check or money order to the N.Y.S. Office of Court Administration.
In order to do a criminal history record search, you will have to complete the Criminal History Record Search application form, which can be accessed on the NYS UCS website. The form requires the name, address, and phone number of the requestor. In order to run a search for a criminal record, an exact match of a name and date of birth should be entered. The application forms should be mailed or filed personally on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the following address:
New York State Office of Court Administration
Office of Administrative Services
Criminal History Record Search
25 Beaver Street - Room 840 - Front Desk
New York, NY 10004
The criminal records that are requested via hand delivery of application forms by 11:30 a.m. are most likely completed by 4:30 p.m. on the next business day. In order to pick up the records, a self-addressed envelope labeled "Hold for Pick-Up" should be presented in the said office between 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For application forms filed through mail, a self-addressed postage-paid envelope should be included in order to receive the search results. The criminal records search can also be emailed to the requestor. The results of the records search show public records pertaining to pending charges and convictions of criminal cases in the courts of New York. However, it is important to note that the search results are not classified as certified documents.
On the same website, there is a link that allows you to have online Direct Access to criminal records. This service can be utilized by business entities and corporations who want to perform background checks on their employees. The requirements to use this application include an ID, password, and a quota of a weekly minimum number of searches. Like the other records searches on the website, the full name and the date of birth of the individual in question are required to start the initial phase of the search. The "Search Request Confirmation" page is printed to serve as your receipt. The results are verified and sent to you via email within approximately four to five hours.
In the "Inmate Lookup" section of the New York Department of Correctional Services website, type in at least the department ID number or name alone or in combination with date of birth. The search will return information about the individual in question.
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services website has a link for criminal history records. In the said link, there are options to search for either personal criminal history records or criminal history record access for civil purposes. A fingerprint submission is required for the search. The specific instructions on how to access these records are detailed on the website.
