Louisiana has a deep heritage that manages to melt French, Spanish, and African cultures from the 18th century together. Before Louisiana achieved statehood in the early 19th century, it was both a French and a Spanish territory. Once it was made a U.S. State, African culture was added to the melting pot. All of this blending can make locating Louisiana genealogy records a great experience.
The Office of Public Health oversees the Division of Vital Records, which maintains the Vital Records Registry. There you'll find birth records from 1907 to the present. Those dating back past 1907 can only be found at the Louisiana State Archives. Louisiana is a "closed record" state. This means that birth and death certificates are not public records.
