Most Minnesota genealogy records are handled by a variety of offices in the state. The Minnesota Department of Health has both birth and death records on file. The local registrar of each county handles marriage and divorce records in the state. In order to obtain a copy of a birth or death record, you can request a non-certified copy via fax or online. These, however, are for informational reasons only, and will not be available if you need them for legal reasons. The Department of Health does not handle Minnesota genealogy records requests in person.
Should you need a copy of a marriage certificate or a divorce decree as part of your search for genealogy records in Minnesota, you will need to contact the registrar in the county where the marriage or divorce took place. In most cases, you will have to attend the office in person and complete an application for the requested records. Genealogy records in Minnesota are not difficult to obtain, but you will have to follow proper procedures.
