Birth, death, marriage, and divorce records make up most of the requests for genealogy records in Mississippi, and in most cases, these documents are available from the Mississippi State Department of Health. Unfortunately, because vital records are not all considered to be public access documents, you may have to demonstrate your interest in the records you're requesting. Public access isn't always permitted, and in almost all cases, you'll need to verify your own identification with a picture ID card. If you are requesting a record that is more than fifty years old, however, you may be considered a genealogy researcher and given access to the documentation you need. This, however, is subject to the discretion of the state registrar.
The vital records office currently has records on file since 1912. If the Mississippi genealogy records you are requesting are older than that, it is best to begin your search with the Mississippi Department of Archives and history. Genealogy records in Mississippi are a bit more difficult to obtain than in some other states, but with a bit of persistence, you should be able to obtain the files you need.
