Due to the very large population of the state, New York genealogy records are handled differently than other states. The New York State Department of Health keeps birth, death and marriage records for all events that occur outside of New York City but inside the state of New York. The New York Department of Health also keeps divorce records for the entire state. For births and deaths that occur inside the five boroughs of New York city (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island), birth and death records are kept by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
In New York City, there are several places to find genealogy records. New York City records may be kept at the Department of Records in the Municipal Archives. Birth certificates before 1910, death certificates prior to 1949, and marriage records prior to 1930 are kept in the Municipal Archives. Marriage records since 1930 are kept by the Office of the City Clerk.
