The Tennessee Health Department has birth records available from 1914 to the present, death and marriage/divorce records are available for the last 50 years. The Tennessee vital records office only keeps birth records for 100 years and all other records for 50 years before they are sent to the Tennessee State Library and Archives for storage. Tennessee genealogy records are relatively easy to get, as most of the information on vital records is considered to be public information. As for death records, cause of death is not considered to be public information and is only available to immediate family members.
Certified copies of vital records are only provided to certain eligible people, but for family researchers looking for genealogy records, Tennessee will provide the public information on the records to people who are not immediate family as long as the person making the request specifically states that he/she is looking for genealogical information.
