Utah genealogy records are kept by the Utah Department of Health. The responsibility to keep vital records was established by section 26-2-1 of the Utah Code. The Utah Department of Health has a database of birth record information from 1905 to the present. Death certificates are also available from 1905 to the present. Marriage and divorce records are available from 1978 to the present. When marriage and divorce information is requested, only informational summaries are available- not copies of the original records. Marriage and divorce records for years prior to 1978 must be requested from the specific county in which the marriage or divorce took place.
There are no special considerations in Utah for requests for information as genealogy records. Utah law states that only the person named in the vital record and his or her immediate family members are eligible to receive vital records- immediate family includes spouse, child, parent, sibling, grandchild or grandparent.
