Marriage records from the state of Louisiana are actually a rich source of history. In some parishes, these records begin as early as 1830. However, negotiating Louisiana marriage records can sometimes be a bit complicated. Marriage records are held by the Louisiana Vital Records Registry, the agency in charge of birth and death records, but only for Orleans Parish. The other 63 parishes (the equivalent of counties in other states) each keep their own marriage records through the clerk of court.
Furthermore, marriage records from Orleans Parish that are more than 50 years old are stored at the Louisiana State Archives.
To avoid all of this confusion, one of the best ways to look for marriage records from Louisiana is to use an online public records finder.
