Louisiana Public Records

Under the Louisiana Public Records law (R.S. 44:1-37), every citizen in the state has the right to "examine, copy or obtain a copy of a public record (unless specifically exempted) of any public body including any state, parish or municipal agency or board."It's important to note that this statute includes language that allows individuals to gain access to proceedings in the state legislature as well. You can submit your request by mail, and in most cases, anything on paper is considered public record including draft level copies of various documents, letters, memos, and even budgets. There are a few classified exemptions to this law, however, so you may not get all of the records you request.
Should you feel the need to request a public record, simply appear in person during regular business hours at the appropriate office. You may be asked for some identification. You may also be asked if you are a convicted felon. If the requested record is not currently being used, the law states that you must be presented with it right away.
