Maryland public records are fairly easy to access. The Public Information Act gives anyone the right to review government records, and extensive costs and delays are supposed to be left out of the process as a result of the act. Fortunately, this act applies to all three branches of Maryland's state government, so getting the public records in Maryland that you need should not be difficult. It is important to note that while the Public Information Act gives you the right to review Maryland public records, it does not require those individuals in the agency of choice to answer any questions at all about the records themselves. Moreover, if a record is not currently on file that meets your needs, one does not have to be created.
According to the Public Information Act, a public record is "the original or copy of any documentary material in any form created or received by an agency in connection with the transaction of public business. Included in this definition are written materials, books, photographs, photocopies, firms, microfilms, records, tapes, computerized records, maps, drawings and other materials."Simply contact the agency in question for the record you wish to review.
