The Library of Virginia offers services to public agencies in order to help manage public records in Virginia. By authority of the Virginia Public Records Act and other state statutes and regulation, the Library is charged with maintaining and ensuring these public records are available for research and historical purposes.
The Library further assists with the move of Virginia public records that are considered to be of historical significance to the Archives at no cost save some copy charges. The collection housed by the Library of Virginia includes books, newspapers, magazines, city, county, state and federal publications and government records, architectural plans, records of businesses and organizations, even Bible records, personal papers and sheet music.
While the staff is available to assist researchers they are not able to perform in depth searches for individuals. For those who need the assistance of a professional researcher, the Library offers a list of researchers who specialize in Virginia public records and history.
