Public records are one of those things that we don't spend much time thinking about until we are faced with the reality that we need them. With as frequently as we all move around today, it is no wonder that folders and boxes containing our public records get left behind.

Birth Certificates
There are at least three occasions in your life where you are going to need an official copy of your birth certificate. First, if you are a teenager, you will need an official copy of your birth certificate to get your first state ID card or your first driver's license.

Second, if you ever plan on getting a US passport, you will also need a copy of your birth certificate. Lastly, if you ever hope to get married, you will need a copy of your birth certificate to help prove your age. Marriage Records
It may be an ugly truth, but in today's society, over half of all marriages end in divorce. Many of us toss our marriage records when our first (or second, or third) marriage ends, but you really should consider hanging on to them.

If you ever wish to get remarried, you will need to prove that your first marriage was annulled. Both marriage and divorce records fall under the public records banner. It can be a cathartic, cleansing moment to clean out your record keeping folders and toss away all signs of a failed marriage, but make sure you keep your official records secure.

Death Records
There is no doubt that death is a subject most of us don't want to think about, but if someone close to you has passed away, you need to hand on to your public records for as long as possible. You will need them to claim any kind of life insurance policy that they may have had, and they can also serve as a valuable tool for those looking to trace their lineage in the future.
